Banded iron formations. Oxygen released by early photosynthesis oxidized dissolved iron in the ocean, forming bands of red iron oxide sediment (these bands of are about 2 billion years old). Oxygen did not accumulate in the atmosphere until all the dissolved iron had precipitated.
