Induction of vulval cell types during larval development.
The vulva arises from 6 precursor cells on the embryo's ventral surface.
The anchor cell in the gonad secretes signal proteins,
causing the closest precursor cell to form the inner
part of the vulva. Two other cells receive a weaker signal and are induced to form the outer vulva.
The other 3 precursor cells form the epidermis.
