An F+ cell carries an F plasmid which contain a Fertility (F) factor. The F factor enables this “donor” cell to form a sex pilus and transfer DNA to an F– “recipient” cell. If the recipient integrates the donor DNA into its genome, genetic recombination can occur in a process called conjugation.
